Our winter wonderland is well on its way! Every year around this time the town of Whitefish is buzzing with dreams of powdery days on the mountain. Volunteers put the classic Whitefish holiday decorations up throughout town. The dog sled guides are preparing their teams for all the trips to come. Whitefish Mountain Resort is gearing up for the 300,000 skiers and snowboarders who will grace its 3,000 acres over the season. And the Lodge at Whitefish Lake has planned a holiday season filled with activities for travelers and locals alike.

December will be a bustling month within the walls of the Lodge! We are bringing back our popular Afternoon Tea with Santa this year. Children of all ages can experience white glove service and get their photo taken with Santa to bring home that day. Over the week of Christmas there will be many activities taking place like storytelling by the fireplace, warm cookies and live music in the lobby, and new this year, an ICE BAR! After the Lodge shuttle brings you back to the Lodge you can warm up with a specialty cocktail for a perfect après ski the second you step off the shuttle. We will ring in the New Year with The Kayla Adams Band in the Boat Club and a special holiday menu created by Executive Chef Wes Coffel.

Their goal is mighty, but simple—save millions of lives lost each year in third world countries by distributing recycled soap. Each month, hotels and motels across the world discard tons of slightly-used soap and shampoo. These products often end up in already overflowing landfills and can potentially contaminate fragile groundwater systems. Through their “Hospitality Recycling Partners Program,” Clean the World collects and repurposes these products using environmentally-friendly and hygienically-safe recycling efforts and save lives one bar of soap at a time! 

WHITEFISH LAKE INS TITUTE

This non-profit corporation is led by a volunteer board of directors and two volunteer committees who are committed to protecting Whitefish Lake and its resources through scientific research, education and outreach programs. The Averill family has donated 30 acres, known as the Viking Preserve, to the institute and gladly support the institute’s Whitefish Wine Auction held annually at The Lodge in July.

The Whitefish Wine Auction proceeds go towards the Whitefish Lake Institute, a science and education based non-profit corporation led by a volunteer board, a science advisory committee and a citizens’ advisory committee. Founded in 2005, the Whitefish Lake Institute is committed to acquiring scientific research and engaging the local citizenry to protect and improve the Whitefish area lake resources of today, while providing a collective vision for tomorrow.

Proceeds from the Whitefish Wine Auction will assist the Whitefish Lake Institute in fulfilling its mission statement in the following ways:

• Phase II Interpretive Nature Trail Construction in the Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve, which is owned and managed by the Whitefish Lake Institute
• Scientific data collection on Whitefish Lake and its tributaries  
• Educational programs for both school children and adults  
• Community stewardship of Whitefish water resources

Inevitably this turns into a competition as the Boat Club agrees to match donations with our own $500 donation to the bartender that brings in the most money for their charity.  Therefore, our local celebrities like to use their celebrity status to bring in friends, colleagues and anyone they can coerce so that they can win the bragging rights of winning this epic achievement.  We have seen costumes, questionable glowing drinks in shot glasses, and emcees for this event.  Any and everything goes, and it’s for charity right?
