Local’s Tip: If you visit the North Fork area of Glacier National Park you will want to stop in to the Polebridge Mercantile and indulge in a huckleberry bear claw! They are ‘to die for’!

If you ask anyone from Montana they’ll tell you to pick up a pair of Old Gringo Boots; not only do they look great but they will last a lifetime too!

Yogo Sapphires-Yogo sapphires are named such as they are only found in the Yogo Gulch part of the Little Belt Mountains in Montana. Typically a cornflower blue color, but also found in deep purple, these gems are a true Montana treasure. Hot (but not too hot) summers with bright blue skies, white fluffy clouds and crisp green landscapes. Every day greats you with a bright sunrise and says goodnight with a colorful sunset that lights up the sky. Your first view of the summer sky will explain why we are the Big Sky State.

In fall the hills are ablaze with golden lodge pole pines and bald eagles are abundant. Photographers come from a great distance just to capture the foliage. The air is crisp and cool and the skies are a deeper blue.

The trees have just started turning near a local ranch.

Whitefish is a true winter wonderland where there is always a fresh layer of snow blanketing the ground and lining every tree. The bright blue skies pop against the white terrain. Whitefish literally buzzes with the excitement of ski season and all the fun to be had.

And lastly, but not least, spring. The wildlife wakes up, trees fill back in with leaves and the flowers begin to bloom. The ground turns a rich green as far as you can see and just the right number for spring showers fall.

My favorite time of year, when the grass is green, skies are blue and snow-capped mountains fill the distance.

If you didn’t notice there is a theme to our seasons: big blue skies! We are blessed to enjoy them year round! No matter the reason, no matter the season, a memory is always waiting to be made in Whitefish.

Our winter wonderland is well on its way! Every year around this time the town of Whitefish is buzzing with dreams of powdery days on the mountain. Volunteers put the classic Whitefish holiday decorations up throughout town. The dog sled guides are preparing their teams for all the trips to come. Whitefish Mountain Resort is gearing up for the 300,000 skiers and snowboarders who will grace its 3,000 acres over the season. And the Lodge at Whitefish Lake has planned a holiday season filled with activities for travelers and locals alike.

December will be a bustling month within the walls of the Lodge! We are bringing back our popular Afternoon Tea with Santa this year. Children of all ages can experience white glove service and get their photo taken with Santa to bring home that day. Over the week of Christmas there will be many activities taking place like storytelling by the fireplace, warm cookies and live music in the lobby, and new this year, an ICE BAR! After the Lodge shuttle brings you back to the Lodge you can warm up with a specialty cocktail for a perfect après ski the second you step off the shuttle. Whitefish Mountain Resort has been named the No. 11 overall resort in the country in SKI magazine’s 2013 readers poll.

“This ranking is truly a reflection of our dedicated employees who consistently provide our customers with an experience that is personal and fun, as well as all the businesses throughout the community that deliver quality products and services to our visitors,” Whitefish Mountain Resort President Dan Graves said in a news release.

Of the top 30, Whitefish is the only resort with a lift ticket under $70. This year’s single-day lift ticket is $67, and drops to $61 per day for two or more days.

2.) Fall Foliage….The Whitefish mountainsides hit their most colorful time in fall as the larch and aspen turn a bright yellow to gold color and contrast sharply against the dark evergreens. This sweet spot in time is a favorite of photographers, professional and amateur alike.

The Whitefish Wine Auction proceeds go towards the Whitefish Lake Institute, a science and education based non-profit corporation led by a volunteer board, a science advisory committee and a citizens’ advisory committee. Founded in 2005, the Whitefish Lake Institute is committed to acquiring scientific research and engaging the local citizenry to protect and improve the Whitefish area lake resources of today, while providing a collective vision for tomorrow.

• Scientific data collection on Whitefish Lake and its tributaries  
• Educational programs for both school children and adults
